Electrical Installations Works

Works in electrical facilities must be carried out by suitably qualified individuals and, as a rule, without electrical power. Works in locations where voltage is present can only be carried out by workers suitably qualified for such situations, who have received specific training and who use tools suitably approved for working with electrical power.

Security during the carrying out of work is ensured by switching the electrical power off and by electric lockout of the parts of the plant where the works are being carried out, and maintaining this lockout while the work is underway.

Lockout for works without electrical power

To achieve lockout and to ensure safety at the place of work whilst the work is taking place it is necessary to respect the following rules, normally known as the 5 Golden Rules, for works without electrical power:

  • separate completely (isolate the installation from all possible sources of electrical power);
  • fix (protect against reconnection) in the open position all the breaker components or switching device in the on position, or adopt preventative measures when that is not feasible;
  • verify there is no electrical power, after having previous identified the place of work and the installation which has been placed without electrical power;
  • ground and connect in a short circuit;
  • protect against nearby power sources and delimit the working zone.

    Respect for these 5 rules ensures almost total protection to the worker against an electric risk and its consequences.

    In indoors installations with low voltage you can dispense with grounding and connection in a short circuit.

    The lockout of an electric installation is normally confirmed through the issuing a Works Authorisation Report.
