Electricity Generation

Today, EDP operates one of the most balanced generation portfolios in the Iberian Peninsula, considering the substantial weight of hydroelectric generation, the operating efficiency of its coal power stations and the importance of its natural gas combined cycle power plants. EDP's presence in Spain through HC Energía makes it the first company to own significant electricity generation assets in both Portugal and Spain.

In December 2010, EDP had an installed electricity generation capacity of 13,815MW in the Iberian Peninsula, including ordinary regime and special regime generation assets (excluding wind power). In 2010, net generation from EDP's electricity generation assets in the Iberian Peninsula totaled 37,660 GWh.

Ending 2010, EDP's ordinary regime generation installed capacity was 9,619 MW, out of which 4,578 MW were hydroelectric power stations and 5,040 MW thermal power stations.

As of December 2010, EDP operated 3,740 MW of installed electricity generation capacity. Net generation in 2010 from HC Energía ordinary regime generation capacity totaled 10,658 GWh.

Special regime generation activity includes electricity generation though mini-hydro, cogeneration, biomass and waste.

Energy generation activity includes a centralised energy management platform responsible for actively managing the price and volume risks for the EDP Group’s whole portfolio in the Iberian Peninsula.

EDP’s strategy for fighting climate change is aimed at progressively reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from its activity, with particular focus on electricity generation.
