The natural gas distribution network in Portugal (medium- and low-pressure networks) is currently organised in six concession areas and seven autonomous networks. EDP Gás (ex Portgás) started operating in the gas distribution business in the north of Portugal in 1994 under a concession contract, and in April 2008, a new concession contract was signed with the Portuguese state for a 40 years period, starting January 1, 2008.
EDP Gás concession area, located in a region with a strong growth potential, covers approximately 25% of the Portuguese population, including 29 boroughs in Oporto, Braga and Viana do Castelo. This area is located in a highly developed industrial region which includes two particularly important industrial centres, Oporto and Vale do Ave. Approximately 60% of the gas is sold to industrial customers. EDP Gás still has potential to grow in the domestic market.
EDP also operates in the gas supply business in Portugal through EDP Gás.Com, a company that owns a license to supply gas in the liberalized market.
EDP also owns 19.8% of Setgás, the fourth largest gas distributor in Portugal which operates in the boroughs of the Setúbal peninsula.
