EDP sees the liberalisation of the Iberian market as an opportunity to expand its activities into the Spanish market. As such, EDP acquired Hidrocantábrico (today HC Energia), the fourth largest electricity company in Spain. With this acquisition, EDP has now a strong presence in both sides of the boarder.

EDP has been consistently focusing in service quality, either through important investments on the distribution and commercial networks or offering integrated solutions to its liberalised clients

The group has been also focusing on efficiency. In the last 3 years, a stringent cost cutting and efficiency improvement program was implemented.

EDP has been also concentrating its assets on the company's core business, reorganising and selling the financial stakes which are not coherent with this objective.
