EDP is present in the gas business in Portugal through EDP Gás, the country's second largest natural gas distributor. EDP entered the capital of EDP Gás (formerly known as Portgás) by the end of 2004 and nowadays owns 72% of the company.
The distribution network of natural gas in Portugal (networks of medium and low pressure) is currently organized around eleven concession areas. The EDP Gás Distribuição (Portgás) activity began distributing natural gas in the concession area, districts of Oporto, Braga and Viana do Castelo, in 1994, and signed in April 2008 a new concession contract with the Portuguese State, 40 years.
The concession area of EDP Gás Distribuição, located in a region with strong growth potential, covers approximately 25% of the population of Portugal, involving 29 municipalities in the districts of Porto, Braga and Viana do Castelo. This area is located in a highly developed industrial area, with the focus on industrial poles of Oporto and Vale do Ave, with approximately 60% of the volume of gas is sold to industrial customers.
EDP Gás Serviço Universal is a company 100% owned by EDP Gás Distribuição and is the last resort supplier for the concession area, being responsible for the supply of natural gas in the regulated market.
EDP Gás also has a presence in the liberalized market through EDP Gás.Com, which operates nationally in the area of large natural gas customers.
EDP Gas Propane, founded in 2008, is responsible for the business of liquefied petroleum gas, working in marketing, operation and maintenance of the network nationally.
EDP Gás also owns a 19,8% Setgás, the fourth largest gas distributor in Portugal, which operates in the district of Setúbal and the southern district of Santarém.
